CINEMATIC SETUP Historical war drama | Japan 1877 | last stand at dawn | grounded realism | desaturated bleach-bypass Multishot sequence, cuts only at the specified points. Muted earth tones, heavy fog, period-accurate detail, 35mm film grain. CHARACTERS The Commander: heavy-set samurai leader, broad face, thick black beard flecked with grey, deep crease between the brows, sweat and grime on the skin, visible pores. Wears a faded indigo hakama and a dark wool haori with a torn left sleeve, a white cloth band tied around the forehead, stained brown at one edge. A long sword in a scuffed black lacquer scabbard, the hilt cord frayed and darkened. The Samurai line: about forty warriors in mismatched layered robes, some with old lacquered chest plates cracked and missing lacing, mud on the hems, straw sandals. The Imperial line: two ranks of soldiers in dark navy wool uniforms with brass buttons, peaked caps, breech-loading rifles with fixed bayonets, uniforms wet with dew. One officer with a sabre at the end of the line. LOCATION A sloped hillside of waist-high pale grass descending into a shallow valley. Fog density 50%, visibility around 40 meters. The samurai line holds the upper slope, the Imperial line stands in a straight row at the valley floor, 150 meters away. Wind moves the grass in slow waves from right to left. Early dawn, sun not yet above the ridge. TIMELINE Shot 1 (0–5s): Extreme close-up, FOV 29, static. The Commander's hands rest on the frayed hilt cord, knuckles whitening as his grip tightens. Slow tilt up to his face: jaw set, breath leaving his nose as white vapor, eyes fixed downhill. Ends on his eyes. HARD CUT Shot 2 (5–10s): Wide shot, FOV 63, static from behind and slightly above the Imperial line. The officer raises his sabre. In one motion the front rank drops to one knee and the rear rank stays standing; every soldier brings his rifle to the shoulder, cheek pressed to the stock, bayonets angled uphill. In the fog on the upper slope, dark shapes rise out of the grass one after another. Ends with both lines facing each other, rifles aimed. HARD CUT Shot 3 (10–16s): Medium tracking shot, FOV 47, camera at waist height running alongside the samurai downhill at 25 km/h. Blades slide free of their scabbards along the line. The Commander leads, mouth open in a wordless shout, robes whipping behind him. A samurai beside him trips in the grass, rolls once and is back on his feet. Handheld. Throughout, maintain an extremely subtle, breath-like camera float to enhance presence. The Imperial line grows clearer through the fog with every stride. Ends with the rifles 50 meters ahead. HARD CUT Shot 4 (16–19s): Extreme close-up, FOV 18, static. A soldier's eye aligned along the rifle barrel, a bead of sweat running down his temple, his finger tightening on the trigger. In the background, out of focus, the officer's sabre swings down. Ends on the sabre reaching its lowest point. HARD CUT Shot 5 (19–24s): Wide side-on shot, FOV 84, low angle, both lines in frame: samurai running in from the left, Imperial ranks on the right. The full line releases a volley: a continuous row of orange muzzle flashes, rifles kicking back into shoulders, then thick white powder smoke rolls forward and swallows the front runners entirely. Ends on a wall of white smoke between the two lines. HARD CUT Shot 6 (24–30s): Medium shot, FOV 47, slow dolly-in through the thinning smoke. The Commander alone in the grass. He plants the sword tip into the earth and leans on it to stay upright, knees trembling, the side of his robe soaked dark, chest heaving. He straightens slowly to his full height and lifts his chin toward the ridge as the first sunlight breaks over it behind him. Ends on his silhouette against the light. No dialogue. Just the Commander standing in the drifting smoke, the grass moving around him. PHYSICS The Commander weighs 90 kg — each footfall downhill presses deep into the wet earth; in the final shot the sword blade flexes slightly under his weight. Grass bends and springs back after each runner. Powder smoke drifts downhill with the wind, slowly, low to the ground. Rifles recoil into shoulders on the volley. LIGHTING Shots 1–5: flat diffused dawn light through fog, cool 6500K, no hard shadows. Shot 6: low golden backlight from the ridge at 3800K cutting through the smoke, rim light on the Commander's shoulders. SFX Sound: No score. Production audio only. Wind through grass, heavy breathing, rifle bolts closing in unison, steel sliding from scabbards, running feet on wet earth, a single rolling volley echoing across the valley, then near silence, ragged breathing and the wind. QUALITY ANCHOR Desaturated bleach-bypass grade, crushed blacks, visible 35mm grain, period-accurate costumes and weapons, natural skin texture. Same face, same wardrobe for the Commander in every shot. The set contains only the hillside, grass, fog and the two lines — no buildings, no added geography. The Commander stays human-sized in frame. Face stable. Limbs anatomically natural. Body proportions consistent throughout. Consistent lighting, no flicker.
