Ask ChatGPT to "pull together a rough cut and get it into Final Cut" and what comes back is an explanation of where Final Cut's panels live, not an edited project. It never saw your footage, so it can't do more than describe the steps. Give the same instruction to an agent that's actually holding a timeline, and the cut happens first, then the project leaves as a file Final Cut opens.
Can ChatGPT actually drive Final Cut Pro?
No, and the gap is wider here than on some other editors. ChatGPT in chat has no eyes on your project and no way to press a button inside Final Cut's window, which rules out direct control everywhere. What makes Final Cut specifically harder is that it doesn't expose a documented scripting API the way some other NLEs do, so there's no equivalent of "write a script that adds this clip" for it to reach for.
What's left, for Final Cut:
- Final Cut's own object tracker and keyers, which attach titles or effects to a moving subject or key out a green screen. These run from inside the app, by a person; ChatGPT can describe which one to use, not operate it.
- Community MCP servers aimed at bridging Final Cut for an agent, built by third parties with no official API to build on. What one can safely reach is narrower than on a host with its own scripting hooks, so check carefully before trusting it with real footage.
- Third-party plugins people use for AI object removal, since Final Cut has no built-in version. ChatGPT can recommend one; it isn't running it.
None of these hand ChatGPT a project it can look at, reason about and edit on its own. That's the actual gap behind "chatgpt final cut pro" searches.
The route that gives it a real timeline
Shoty is a desktop video editor (Mac and Windows) with an agent chat built in. Pick ChatGPT in the model picker and the problem changes shape:
- Shoty runs the official Codex CLI on your machine, signed in with your own OpenAI account. It never sees your token and charges no fee for the agent.
- For each turn, Shoty opens a local MCP server and hands the agent tools: look at a frame, read and update the timeline, generate a shot, export. Every call shows up in the chat.
- The timeline is a text format (
.shoty), so the agent reads and edits a structure directly instead of waiting on a scripting API that Final Cut doesn't offer. - When the cut is done, Shoty exports FCPXML, the format Final Cut Pro was built to import, along with EDL and OpenTimelineIO for other hosts.
ChatGPT never touches Final Cut in this flow. It edits a project Final Cut can later open, so the missing scripting API never becomes a blocker for the part the agent is actually doing.
1. Do the cut in Shoty, not in Final Cut
Ask for the rough cut, a VFX fix or the subtitle pass while the project is still in Shoty.
Cut the dead air out of the first five minutes of the interview, keep room tone under the cuts, and add burned-in English subtitles.
2. Name what must not change
The clip above swaps the sofa's background for a rooftop at dusk, with the two people, their motion and the camera move untouched. Carry the same instruction pattern into any VFX fix before export:
Replace the background behind the two people with a rooftop at dusk. Keep them, their motion and the camera move exactly as they are.
3. Export for Final Cut
Export this project as FCPXML for Final Cut Pro.
EDL and OpenTimelineIO work too, but FCPXML is the format Final Cut is built around.
4. Finish where you already work
Color, titles and the keyer work for green screen shots stay in Final Cut like always. Shoty's job ends at the cut and the AI shots.
Where this still needs you
- Picking the beat. The agent finds every pause fast; which one actually lands is still an editor's call, and the Shoty timeline is always there to trim by hand.
- Reviewing generated shots. Anything sent to a video model costs credits, so set the run mode to review if you want to approve shots before they render.
- Hand-tuned tracking. Final Cut's own object tracker is still the right tool when you need to attach something to a moving subject frame by frame yourself.
